Alaska Abaze 2012

Here's a little recap video from our team that went to Alaska this summer.  Thank you for all your prayers and support.  To God be the glory.

I miss this...

In a little while, my family, myself, and a few others from our church will be going up to Alaska. We'll be helping out with a camp.

Makes me think about earlier times.  I'll try to blog about it more, but this is one of my favorite pics and memories.

We were at a smaller village outside of Savusavu, Fiji.  The house we were in didn't have windows or doors...just frames & we didn't have electricity.  So at night, we had to use our flash lights to see & when our team would have dinner or talk about stuff, we would notice dozens of little eyes staring at us following our every move...like we were a TV show.

The next morning, we got to hang out and play.  We passed out stickers and little bouncy balls...and other kinds of stuff.  It was really amazing to see how excited these kids were to get these gifts.  Made me think about how simple things can bring so much joy...and how we...I might take those types of things for granted living in Hawaii.

Moments like these have shaped...and probably changed the way I see the world and the people living in it.  There is a lot of beauty in the world, we just need to dig a little deeper sometimes to see it.

PI, HI, & me

A few years ago I got to go to the Philippines for a short mission trip with YWAM (Holoholo Ministries).  It was really great.  I love to see different places and experience different cultures.  Not only do you get to learn about other people, but you learn a lot about yourself.

Let me say that the Philippines is a beautiful place.

But like all places, there are areas...that could use a little more beauty.  Areas you don't see on the vacation brochure...

This is the Balatas dump.

We went to the dump on more than one day.

There were a lot of things you don't want to see there.  Homes...built on trash.  The ground you walk on sinking just a little under the weight of your foot...because it's not soil...it's trash.  At another site named 'Smokey Mountain', methane gas would be visibly rising out of the 'mountains' of rubbish.  But the most heart breaking thing about this whole scene is the people...kids even...going through the trash for things they can recycle for money...or for things they can eat like left over hamburgers and other food.

Holoholo D.T.S.

In January 2001, I was a part of the very first one of these. It was hard, but it was good. During this time God started to become really...real to me. Not only that but He began to challenge me to see life with eyes of faith...to see things that 'were not' as if they 'were'...and to trust Him more.

Today, it would be fair to say that I am still learning about faith, trust, & God...but it would also be fair to say that in doing a DTS I'm further along than I would have been without it.

Here's their latest and greatest promo video.

"We Go" YWAM Holoholo DTS in Kona, Hawaii from YWAM - crown media on Vimeo.

Personal note: DTS is not a program that will change you forever. Instead, by doing a DTS you give yourself time to be changed forever. You remove yourself from the distractions of day to day living (work, school, bills, etc.) and give yourself time to strengthen your relationship with the Lover of our soul.
